High Granularity Calorimeter development at CERN. Researchers developing modules for the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector that is part of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. This equipment is part of the HGCAL (High Granularity Calorimeter) upgrade project. The particle beams collided at the LHC create new particles that are detected by equipment such as this. These modules are based on hexagonal silicon sensors, attached to custom-made electronics used in the CMS. The particles that will be detected are electrons and charged pions.
