Propylaea of the Acropolis. 19th-century illustration of the Propylaea, the monumental gateway to the Acropolis, an ancient citadel that was built in the 5th century BC in Athens in Greece. The most famous temple in the Acropolis is the Parthenon, dedicated to the Ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. This plan (labelled in French) shows the steps and the columns of the Propylaea, as well as three scales in Greek feet (podes, left), metres (centre) and French feet (right). This illustration was published in 1833. | |
