Bridgnorth Cliff Railway. Carriage starting to descend on the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway, also known as the Bridgnorth Castle Hill Railway. This funicular railway has two carriages connected by cable. One carriage goes down while the other goes up. The line was opened in 1892 and links the Low Town area of Bridgnorth, Shropshire, UK, with the High Town, built on Castle Hill. It was originally powered by gravity, with a tank under the upper carriage being filled with water, gaining extra weight and thereby allowing it to descend. Since 1944, the cables have been moved by an electrically powered pulley. Photographed in June 2018. | |
