Leg artery cannulation sites, illustration. Usually, the radial artery of the wrist is chosen as the site to insert an indwelling arterial catheter to monitor a patient's blood pressure and other vital signs and measurements. When the radial artery is not available, an artery in the ankle, the dorsalis pedis, is sometimes used instead. Another artery that is an alternative site of cannulation is the posterior tibial artery that descends from the knee to the ankle. This illustration shows the anatomy of the lower leg in relation to these arteries, including the two lower leg bones (tibia and fibula). | |
