Tsetse fly research specimen in a sample tube after being marked with fluorescent tracking powder (pink). The tsetse fly is a specimen of Glossina palpalis gambiensis. This tagging technique is part of the ERC REVOLINC research project (Revolutionizing Insect Control). This project aims to develop the sterile insect technique (SIT),using a sterile insect male not only as a sexual competitor but also as a specific carrier of biocides to the targeted female. The marking powder also contains the growth inhibitor pyriproxyfen, which is designed to impact female fertility. Tsetse flies are blood-sucking parasitic flies found in tropical Africa that transmit Trypanosoma protozoa, which cause sleeping sickness in humans. Photographed in 2019. | |
