The Matterhorn as seen from near Trockener Steg, above Zermatt,Valais,Switzerland. The rocks in the foreground are ophiolites. Some have been uplifted from depths of at least 100 km within the Earth's crust during the formation of the Alps. Orange-brown colours are due to weathering of iron-bearing minerals. The small lake was formed by glacial erosion. The moon is above and left of the Matterhorn's summit. | |
