Close-up of a cicada wing, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Cicadas are large insects from the order Hemiptera. Researchers have discovered that some species of cicada have a rough nanotexture on their wings that creates open spaces around water droplets. This allows surface tension to force the droplets off the wings making the wing surface very good at repelling water (hydrophobic). This property is being used by researchers as an insight into the design of artificial surfaces with de-icing,self-cleaning and anti-fogging abilities.
