Clostridium perfringens bacteria, 3D computer illustration based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imagery. This is a Gram- positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium that is found in soil, and human and animal intestines. C. perfringens causes blood poisoning, types of food poisoning and gas gangrene. It secretes exotoxins; one of which, alpha-toxin (a lecithinase enzyme) has the ability to destroy plasma membranes surrounding cells, a possible cause of tissue damage in gas gangrene. Food poisoning from C. perfringens results from eating foods where the species has developed and formed exotoxins. | |
