Roman fort in London, (c122 AD?). An artist's impression of the fort built to house Roman troops. This view looks north-east, and shows the fort after the construction of the landward wall. The fort was placed outside the town, well away from the main centre of population. It was possibly constructed as part of improvements around the time of the visit of the Emperor Hadrian, and was used primarily as barracks for those soldiers working for the governor's staff. Parts of it are still visible at London Wall. | |
