B and Z forms of DNA. Computer illustration of the B (left) and Z (right) forms of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecule. DNA is composed of two strands twisted into a double helix. Each strand consists of a sugar-phosphate backbone attached to nucleotide bases. There are four bases: adenine (A),cytosine (C),guanine (G),and thymine (T),which are joined together by hydrogen bonds. DNA contains sections called genes that encode the body's genetic information. Z-DNA turns about the helical axis in a left-hand spiral (zig-zag configuration),unlike the more common B-DNA form which winds to the right. Z-DNA is also a slimmer and more elongated molecule than B-DNA.
