Mitochondria in breast cancer cells, fluorescent light micrograph. Mitochondria are the key sites of metabolic activity in eukaryotic cells. They are the principal source of the energy transfer molecule ATP, but are also involved in fatty acid breakdown and programmed cell death. Mitochondria dysfunction has been associated with neurodegenerative disorders, especially Parkinson's disease, and defects in mitochondria turnover are thought to play a role in cancer. These mitochondria are in breast cancer cells. Mitochondria form a complicated network in cells and move along microtubule filaments. The mitochondria here are labelled with a yellow fluorescent dye, with microtubules similarly tagged (in grey).
