Cropped stereograph of photographer and assistant setting up a camera on California Street on Nob Hill. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquake that struck San Francisco and the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. Devastating fires broke out in the city and lasted for several days. As a result of the quake and fires, about 3, 000 people died and over 80% of San Francisco was destroyed. The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.9. Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada. As damaging as the earthquake and its aftershocks were, the fires that burned out of control afterward were even more destructive. It has been estimated that up to 90% of the total destruction was the result of the subsequent fires. Photographed by George W. Griffith, 1906. | |
