Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a sputum smear is stained using fluorescent auramine with acridine orange counterstain. The auramine stain is absorbed by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacilli, which allows them to glow when view under the microscope using fluorescent lighting, and the acridine orange counterstain will promote visibility by reducing contrast. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an obligate pathogenic bacterial species in the family Mycobacteriaceae and the causative agent of tuberculosis. The physiology of M. tuberculosis is highly aerobic and requires high levels of oxygen. Primarily a pathogen of the mammalian respiratory system, it infects the lungs. Magnification: 950x. | |
