Magellanic Clouds, Milky Way and VLT telescopes. At far right is the Milky Way. At upper centre are two satellite dwarf galaxies, the Small Magellanic Cloud and Large Magellanic Cloud. In the foreground are the four auxiliary telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile's Atacama Desert. Operated by the ESO (European Southern Observatory), the VLT interferometer, one of the most powerful telescopes in the world, is located on Cerro Paranal at an altitude of 2600 metres. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. Photographed on 16 October 2015. | |
