Acinar cells containing various number of zymogen granules of various size and maturity are arranged around the mutual lumen that contains digestive enzymes. The luminal surface of the acinar cells are covered with a thin layer of material (arrows) that presents the extended cytoplasm of a centroacinar cell that lies between the acinar cells as a dark triangular cell. The functional relationship between centroacinar and acinar cells have not been well studied and some reports indicate their role in controlling the excretion of the enzymes from acinar cells through the retraction and extension of their cytoplasm.
