Medical visualization comparing clogged carotid arteries with healthy, normal carotid arteries. The clogged vessels have collected with plaque made up of substances such as lipids (for example, cholesterol) and calcium. This process of plaque build-up is called atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. As plaque accumulates, it narrows the interior of the blood vessels and limits the flow of blood to cells and tissues, starving them of oxygen. Clogged carotid arteries can cut off blood supply to the brain, causing a stroke. | |
