Colour enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a lily pollen grain. This striking image shows pollen from the bulbous flowering plants we call Lilies. The complex structure of the pollen hints at a complex evolutionary history underlying the reproductive biology of these prominent flowers. Lilies have played an important role in mythology and popular culture and are popular in flower arrangements because of their attractive flowers and pretty fragrance. Pollen grains, containing the male sex cells (gametes), are reproductive structures produced by the male parts of flowering plants. The hard outer casing (exine) protects the gametes during transit between flowers. | |
