Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) is a novel by Lewis Carroll, the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). The Hatter is a fictional character in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. He is often referred to as the Mad Hatter, though this term was never used by Carroll. The phrase, mad as a hatter, pre-dates Carroll's works. The Hatter and the March Hare are referred to as both mad by the Cheshire Cat, in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in the seventh chapter titled A Mad Tea-Party. Set six months later than the earlier book, Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. John Tenniel (February 28, 1820, February 25, 1914) was an English illustrator, graphic humourist, and political cartoonist prominent in the second half of the 19th century. |
