These spruce tree stumps and root systems were buried for about 4000 years before being uncovered by recent winter stoms. This and many other spruce trees were killed when the land they were growing on suddenly dropped into the sea, likely caused by a large earthquake. Ghost forests are common on some sections of the Oregon Coast.
