Earth's internal structure, computer illustration. The crust is about ten kilometres thick under the oceans and about forty kilometres thick under the continents. It is composed of sedimentary rocks, granite and basalt, that have been mixed under the effect of the intense geological activity of the Earth. Underneath is the mantle (upper and lower), a solid layer about 3000 kilometres deep, formed of silicates rich in iron and magnesium. Finally, in the centre is the nucleus, which is composed of iron and a little nickel. The nucleus is composed of two layers: the outer liquid core and the inner solid core. In the centre, the temperature is about 5000 degrees Celsius and the pressure several million times that of the surface. | |
