Doppler ultrasound for ankle-brachial pressure index. Medical staff using an ultrasound transducer to monitor and examine the arteries of the arm and lower leg. The ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) is calculated by dividing the systolic blood pressure in the ankle by the pressure in the arm. This examination allows diagnosis of any narrowing or obstruction of the leg arteries, as well as helping to diagnose peripheral artery occlusive disease (PAOD). Here, the brachial (arm) component of this pressure index is being recorded. For the ankle measurement, see image C042/6816. | |
