Extrasolar planet and hydrogen cloud, illustration. At upper right is the faint red dwarf star GJ 436 (Gliese 436), 30 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Leo. Below it is the warm, Neptune-sized planet GJ 436b. The surrounding cloud of hydrogen is named 'The Behemoth', an enormous comet-like cloud produced by the planet. The hydrogen is evaporating from the planet due to extreme radiation from the star. A phenomenon this large has never before been seen around any exoplanet. Image published in 2015. | |
