Globular cluster NGC 1898, HST image. Discovered in November 1834 by British astronomer John Herschel, NGC 1898 is near the centre of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), 170, 000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Dorado. Globular clusters are relics of the first epochs of galaxy formation. Observations of NGC 1898 help to determine if its properties are similar to the ones found in the Milky Way, or if it has different features. This optical image was obtained by the HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) sensors. Image published in 2018. | |
