Ringworm and secondary bacterial infection of the foot. This is a case of a chronic fungal skin infection on the left foot of an 80-year-old man. Known as ringworm, and also called athlete's foot or tinea pedis, this is a dermatophyte infection caused by a fungus. It is highly contagious and is spread by direct contact or via infected material. It is treated by application of an antifungal agent. Secondary bacterial infections occur following an initial infection, and are treated with antibiotics. | |
