Larval anglerfishes are enveloped in a jelly casing. As they develop, this casing disappears. These are larval females from the family Oneirodidae. This developmental series depicts the youngest larva at the top and the oldest at the bottom. They are in developmental order. These individuals were trawled in the Gulf of Mexico, 2016, from between 1, 500 and 600 meters depth. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project. | |
