Newton rings. Newton rings is an interference pattern between a spherical and a plane wavefronts. Such wavefronts can be obtained in practice by reflecting a collimated beam from nearby spherical and plane surfaces. When observed in monochromatic light, the pattern is a series of concentric rings (fringes). Shown here are Newton rings obtained by reflecting a semiconductor laser beam from a plano-convex lens as observed on a screen. Characteristic laser speckle pattern is apparent. It results from light scattering by (microscopically) rough texture of the screen. Digitally manipulated. | |
