Plague victims, 16th-century illustration. Dead and dying livestock and people are being examined in the street and by torchlight. The scene is captioned in Latin, with the quote at lower centre from Virgil's Aeneid (Book Three). It translates as: 'They relinquished sweet life, or dragged their sick limbs around'. At upper left, two female figures care for a man on his sickbed, with the Latin words in the beam of light referring to sacred Phyrgian deities. This illustration is thought to be by Italian artist Marcantonio Raimondi, after Raphael, and dates from around 1515. | |
