Higgs boson research. Graphic of a candidate Higgs boson decay event detected at CERN in October 2017. This event, thought to be a Higgs boson decaying to two b-quarks (blue cones), was recorded with the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) detector on 19 October 2017. The decay event also included a W boson decaying to a muon (red) and a neutrino. The neutrino leaves the detector unseen, and is reconstructed through the missing transverse energy (dashed line). In the Standard Model, the Higgs boson is used to explain why particles have mass. CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) announced the Higgs boson discovery on 4 July 2012. | |
