Pneumonia vaccine. Packaging and vial for a pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, used to prevent diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. These diseases include meningitis, septicaemia (blood poisoning), pneumonia and ear infections. The vaccine contains inactivated extracts common types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. When injected, the vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies, but without causing an infection. The immune system can then respond quickly to future infections. Such vaccines are only given to people at risk, such as the elderly, people with diabetes and those with a weakened immune system. One dose is usually sufficient. | |
