Water-powered furnace bellows. 16th-century illustration of a water wheel powering bellows which are blowing air into furnaces. The water wheel is connected to the bellows through a series of crankshafts. This illustration is from 'Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine' (1588) by Italian engineer Agostino Ramelli (1531-c.1610). This work contains nearly 200 designs for devices, many of them water-raising machines including water wheels, pumps, mills, fountains, and wells. | |
