Milky Way over Mount Everest. The centre bulge of the Milky Way (upper right) shines brightly over Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world at 8848 metres. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. This photograph was taken from the North Base camp at Tibet, China, at an elevation of 5200 metres. Mount Everest's name is Chomolungma in the Tibetan language, often translated as 'mother of the universe'. Photographed on 13 August 2015. | |
