Telomeres and chromosome formation. Illustration of strands of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, yellow) coiling to form the teleomere ends of a chromosome. DNA forms strands of chromatin which condenses during cell division to form structures called chromosomes (one shown here). The tips of the chromosome arms are regions known as telomeres. The telomere is a region of repeated non-coding nucleotides, the function of which is to prevent coding nucleotides being lost during DNA replication. Telomeres shorten over time and this process is thought to play a role in cancer and ageing. | |
