Optical effect solar corona in an even layer of altocumulus cloud (altocumulus stratiformis). A solar corona (different from the Sun's outer atmosphere seen during a solar eclipse) is a diffraction phenomenon. The rings usually extend for a few solar radii around the solar disc. It can often be seen in clouds close to the Sun. Photographed late on a July afternoon over Berkshire, UK. | |
