Hallucigenia sparsa invertebrate on a seabed, illustration. This invertebrate, a lobopodian worm, evolved during the Cambrian Period, which is known for the Cambrian Explosion (around 500 million years ago), the evolution of an extremely diverse array of invertebrates. Most of these went extinct, but the ones that remained formed the basis of animal life on Earth today. It is thought that Hallucigenia is related to today's arthropods. It had a distinctive rigid conical spine above each pair of legs. | |
