Eyelash viper juvenile (Bothriechis schlegelii). This small venomous pit viper inhabits trees in forests in tropical areas of Central and South America. It can reach lengths of 75 centimetres. The scales over its eyes, which give it its name, are thought to aid in camouflage. It feeds on rodents, frogs, lizards and small birds, striking from an ambush site. Photographed in Costa Rica. | |
