Ash plume rising from a vent on Kilauea, a volcano on the main island of Hawaii. This weak ash plume rose from the Overlook Vent in Halema'uma'u crater at 09:17 HST (Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time). This event produced darker plume that lacked the pink-coloured ash seen in an earlier plume. This plume was probably caused by rockfall into the deepening vent, instead of by groundwater and steam-driven explosions. This volcanic activity is part of the eruptive episode that began in May 2018, known as the 2018 lower Puna eruption. Photographed on 11 May 2018. | |
