Acetylcholine receptors, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). These receptors (red and green dots) are on a cell membrane prepared from the tissue of an electric fish. The receptor protein forms a ring with a diameter of about 75 angstroms. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that is a key component of the nervous systems of many organisms. It binds to the receptors shown here, and many nervous system drugs act by binding to these receptors. Magnification: x80, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
