Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus przewalskii) in snow in the Atapuerca region of Spain. This subspecies of the wild horse (Equus ferus) is native to the steppes of central Asia and was at one time extinct in the wild. Several of these wild horses were introduced here in 2014 as part of the Living Paleolithic rewilding project intended to restore the previous state of the ecosystems in the region. Atapuerca is famous for the extensive fossil discoveries made here that have led to numerous advancements in the understanding of human evolution. Prehistoric horses were among the animals depicted by paleolithic artists in the Altamira caves. | |
