Hippolyte Adolphe Taine (1828-1893), French literary theorist, philosopher and historian. Taine studied at the Ecole Normale, and completed a doctorate at the Sorbonne. His theories and philosophies centred on naturalism and sociological positivism. He had an immense influence on the French literature of the day, including correspondence with authors such as Zola, Bourget and Maupassant. In 1878, he was elected to Seat 25 of the French Academy.
