Emily Greene Balch (1867-1961), US economist and sociologist. Balch studied at Bryn Mawr College, Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Berlin, before starting a career teaching at Wellesley College in 1896. She taught on immigration and the economic role of women. As a lifelong pacifist, she worked with the Women's Peace party and supported the rights of conscientious objectors. After the First World War, she worked in the international peace movement and was a founding member and leader of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946. This Harris and Ewing photograph dates from between 1905 and 1945. | |
