Amoeba parasite engulfing red blood cells, illustration. This is an Entamoeba histolytica parasite, a single-celled organism that causes amoebic dysentery (amoebiasis) and ulcers. It is spread by faecal contamination of food and water and is most common where sanitation is poor. Amoebae invade the intestines, but may spread to the liver, lungs and other tissues. Infection is caused by the ingestion of cysts that develop into the pathogenic trophozoite stage. Entamoeba histolytica occurs worldwide, with around half of the population infected in warmer climates. | |
