Prehistoric limestone figure. Headless limestone figure from the Hypogeum of Hal-Saflieni. The stone used here is globigerina limestone. Half of the thorax, the left arm, the upper portion of the right thigh and fore-parts of both feet are broken away, but traces of red pigment appear on various parts of the figure. It is in a standing position, with the right arm straight down and the hand resting on the hip. Part of a biconical hole, which once led to the head socket is now broken. A limestone head which was found in the same pit at the Hypogeum of Hal-Saflieni seems to fit this socket. The Hal-Saflieni site dates from around 2500 BC. Photographed at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, Malta. | |
