Implantable defibrillator surgery. Operating table and equipment ready for use in surgery to fit an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). The screens at upper left display X-rays of the blood vessels of the patient's chest, helping the surgeons to guide the ICD's wires to the correct location. An ICD is used to treat serious ventricular arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythm). It delivers an electrical shock that resets the heart rate to a normal rhythm. The main body of the ICD sits just under the skin and is attached to wires implanted into the heart muscle.
