Nipah virus infection. Light micrograph of a tissue specimen from an animal's central nervous system (CNS) in a case of a Nipah virus infection. Nipah virus is zoonotic (transmitted to humans from animals). It has been associated with encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and is also characterized by fever and drowsiness and more serious central nervous system disease, such as coma, seizures, and inability to maintain breathing. It was first described in Malaysia and Singapore in pig farmers. The virus is also found in the wild in bats. It was isolated and identified in 1999. | |
