Heart defect implant. Lateral (side view) X-ray of the chest of a 15-year-old boy who has had an implant (centre, bright spots) placed in his heart to treat a congenital (present from birth) defect. The front of the body is at right. The defect here was an atrial septal defect (ASD), an abnormal hole between two of the chambers of the heart. The implant has been used to plug this hole. This is an implant made of Nitinol (an alloy of nickel and titanium). It was placed in the heart using percutaneous coronary intervention. | |
