John Powell and Johns Hopkins University field trip. Scottish geologist Archibald Geikie (1835-1924) and US geologist Major John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) amongst other geologists from the US Geological Survey and John Hopkins University during a field trip to the Potomac Falls. Powell is famous for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers that included the first passage of European Americans through the Grand Canyon. He was the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey between 1881 and 1894, during which time he proposed policies for development of the arid American West. This was almost the last appearance of Major Powell at a geologist gathering. Photographed at Jefferson's Rock, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, USA, on 30th April 1897. | |
