ACCESS jet aircraft biofuel research. Test flight by a DC-8 jet aircraft (upper right) to study the effects of the use of biofuels. A sampler aircraft (upper centre) is measuring the chemical components from the exhaust of the DC-8 aircraft. This NASA study involved the aircraft's four engines burning either JP-8 jet fuel or a 50-50 blend of JP-8 and a renewable alternative fuel produced from Camelina plant oil. The conclusions were that the use of the biofuels reduced the amount of pollution produced. This test flight was part of the second Alternative Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise Emissions Study (ACCESS). ACCESS I took place in 2013. ACCESS II took place in 2014. This flight took place over California, USA. | |
