Sound signals are passed from the ears via the auditory nerves to the auditory brainstem. Key deep-seated brain areas (left) are the cochlear nucleus, the trapezoid body, the superior olivary complex, the lateral lemniscus, the inferior colliculi, and the medial geniculate nucleus (part of the auditory thalamus). The cerebellum is also involved in auditory processing. The areas of the cerebral cortex involved in hearing (right) include the primary auditory cortex (part of the temporal lobe) and the surrounding regions of the secondary auditory cortex.
