Crab Nebula, optical image. This supernova remnant, also known as M1, NGC 1952 and Taurus A, consists of the remains of an exploded star, expanding outwards at about 1500 kilometres per second. The explosion was observed by Chinese astronomers in 1054. The radiation from the pulsar left behind by the supernova is so strong that it is deforming the inner parts of the nebula. Image data obtained by the Wide Field Imager (WFI) on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope. Image published in 2015. | |
