Quasar spectrum. Spectrograph obtained by the Very Large Telescope (VLT), showing the range of light emitted by a distant quasar (quasi-stellar object) known as HE0940-1050. Quasars are powerful and active galactic nuclei observed at immense distances in the early universe. Powered by supermassive black holes, they emit huge amounts of radiation and are among the brightest objects in the known Universe. The changes in the spectra of quasars as their light travels towards us, allow the identification of elements in the intergalactic medium. This spectrum has absorption lines (black). It was obtained by the UVES (Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph) instrument mounted on the VLT. These absorption lines include the faintest ever observed in a quasar spectrum.
